High School Musical was a defining part of most of our childhoods but, like a lot of films and TV shows, when you re-watch them as an adult you realise you actually missed SO much. And HSM is definitely no exception. Fans of the Disney franchise have taken to Twitter with a new theory on the film, and it’s that the characters Chad Danforth and Ryan Evans were actually gay and in a relationship together. Just to give you a quick recap we know it’s been a while : Chad was Troy’s basketball best friend and was supposed to be dating Taylor McKessie, while Ryan was Sharpay’s brother and took Kelsi to the prom. But Taylor and Kelsi aside, fans think they’ve figured out that Chad and Ryan were interested in each other the whole time. There is undoubtedly a lot of tension in the scene, which on the surface seems like good old baseball rivalry, but fans think it’s actually a big dose of sexual tension between the pair. Plus, they reckon that baseball is one huge homoerotic metaphor. The crowd boos. I begin to walk off in shame, when a voice speaks and commands silence from the room.
Everybody loves a good reboot, but there’s one HSM star who wants the franchise to be the start of something new. On Sunday, High School Musical star Lucas Grabeel said he wouldn’t play Ryan Evans if the film were made today, noting that it would be taking an opportunity away from gay actors. Last week, director Kenny Ortega confirmed Ryan was gay in the Disney Channel films, but the creators didn’t feel the production company would be responsive to the character confirming his sexuality in the script.
Instead, Ortega said, he thought Ryan would “come out in college. And while fans had always thought Ryan was gay, it was never actually confirmed on screen. In June, Ortega confirmed that Ryan was gay in an interview with Variety , but admitted he didn’t put it into the script because, “Disney might not be ready to cross that line and move into that territory yet.
When it comes to the Disney Channel, High School Musical is one of a kind. School Musical was getting rebooted as a TV show, and now that we finally have a premiere date and a cast, Lucas Grabeel as Ryan Evans.
Ryan Evans, the High School Musical character that everybody thinks is gay, has officially been outed. No, not necessarily in High School Musical 3 , the third entry of the popular Disney movie series currently being filmed for an October theatrical release. Photo credit: Joan Marcus. In the movie, Ryan dresses stylishly, is musically inclined, wears a different hat with every outfit, and, unlike all the other main characters, has no apparent love interest.
As a result, many observers, including some here at AfterElton. But in the stage version, I wanted to more fully articulate that tint and say, hey, this kid is who he is. Yes, I consider him a young gay guy without ever having to say it. And we do. On stage, the character also dresses even flashier than in the movies, gets some catty witticisms, and is played with a more flamboyant lilt. I love that there is a character in this show that I would have loved when I was in high school.
And so I did, within the parameters of a family show. I have allusions to Mommie Dearest , Valley of the Dolls , just fun kinda insider campy stuff.
THEN AND NOW: The cast of the ‘High School Musical’ movies 14 years later
After revealing that Sharpay’s twin brother — who briefly dated pianist Kelsi Nielsen in the trilogy’s final instalment — would have “come out in college” and let “his true colours come forward”, the filmmaker said he wasn’t sure Disney was “ready to cross that line” when the popular series was being made in the mid s. Joe Serafini and Frankie Rodriguez in High School Musical: The on the Disney Channel, the character Ryan Evans stood out for many a Carlos (Frankie Rodriguez) asks Seb (Joe Serafini) to be his Homecoming date.
Ryan Evans is one of the main characters of High School Musical. He’s co-president of the Drama Club with his fraternal twin sister Sharpay , with whom he’s co-starred in seventeen school productions to date. Ryan and his sister, Sharpay, are the children of Vance and Derby Evans , and were the stars of seventeen school productions. His 1st appearance was in the original High School Musical on January 20, , and his 2nd appearance was on August 17, in High School Musical 2. He was chosen by Julliard School to take their scholarship because of his choreography in the Senior Year Spring Musical.
In spite of some moments where Ryan appears annoyed by Sharpay’s domineering attitude, he accepts her leadership unquestioningly throughout the movie, most often acting as a source of comic relief. In the second movie, however, Ryan’s discontent is more pronounced as he struggles to be considered his sister’s equal. Toward the beginning of the movie, he assists Sharpay in her plan to win Troy Bolton, but when Sharpay replaces him with Troy in their talent show performance, he gains enough confidence to stand up to her, befriending the Wildcats through a baseball game; whereupon, he impresses them with his slugging prowess by hitting four homeruns.
He agrees to choreograph their show, instead. Sharpay is shocked by her brother’s actions, demanding that he tell her when he became “one of them,” which Ryan merely takes as a compliment. In the end, after many twists and turns, Ryan orchestrates a plan to have Troy sing with Gabriella instead of Sharpay in the Wildcats’ show, performing Everyday.
Sharpay, apparently moved by the performance, announces Ryan as the winner of the talent show and presents him with the Star Dazzle award. In this movie, you could see Ryan as his own person, and we learn that without Sharpay he is actually as nice as any Wildcat and can work well with all of them. In the third and final movie, Ryan was seen in the basketball championship and he’s performing as a mascot.
